Why People Die While Watching Tense Football Matches: Expert Insights on Causes, Prevention
Five Nigerian football enthusiasts met their untimely demise on Wednesday while engrossed in the riveting semi-final clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The emotionally charged match, marred by Victor Osimhen’s disallowed goal, Ola Aina’s penalty miss, and controversial refereeing decisions, proved overwhelming for some fans, leading to tragic consequences.
Medical experts, including Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Ramon Moronkola and President of the Nigerian Cardiac Society Prof Augustine Odili, shed light on the underlying medical conditions that could trigger sudden death during tense football matches.
Heart Attack and Stroke: Dr. Moronkola pointed to heart attacks or strokes as potential culprits, emphasizing the susceptibility of individuals with heart failure or ischemic heart disease. Excitement during such matches can exacerbate these conditions, increasing the risk of a fatal event.
Excitement and Grief: The emotional rollercoaster of excitement or grief, particularly in those with diagnosed or undiagnosed cardiovascular issues, can contribute to sudden deaths. Prof Odili highlighted the risk of arrhythmias, abnormal heart rhythms induced by emotional surges, as another potential cause.
Expressing condolences, Prof Odili acknowledged the unfortunate death of a Nigerian residing in Cote d’Ivoire during the match, suggesting a possible heart attack triggered by emotional expression.
Prevention Measures:
In response to these tragic incidents, Dr. Moronkola emphasized the importance of regular health checks for everyone, even those without apparent symptoms. He stressed the need for immediate enhancement of emergency response and preparedness measures in Nigeria.
He urged individuals to prioritize regular health checks to detect underlying health issues, emphasizing the significance of managing conditions like hypertension. The call for proactive health management comes as a crucial step in averting unforeseen tragedies during emotionally charged events like football matches.
As the nation mourns the loss of these avid football supporters, the focus shifts towards raising awareness about cardiovascular health and fostering a culture of regular health check-ups to prevent similar heart-wrenching incidents in the future.
