Why our officials were present at ADC convention – British High Commission explains engagement
The British High Commission has explained the presence of its officials at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention in Abuja, saying the engagement falls within routine diplomatic practice.
The clarification followed claims by ADC leaders that a three-person delegation from the High Commission attended the event, reportedly led by Political Secretary Thomas Samson, alongside Nigerian staff member Damilola Oyedele.
The party also alleged that the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, was present. The Chinese embassy later rejected the claim, stating that neither the ambassador nor any of its diplomats attended the convention, and adding that an Asian man referenced by party figures was not connected to the mission.
Responding to enquiries, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said its officials regularly engage with political and civic actors across Nigeria, including political parties, as part of efforts to support democratic governance and institutional development.
The statement did not directly confirm attendance at the convention but maintained that participation in such engagements is consistent with standard diplomatic practice and international norms.
The ADC, which continues to position itself as a major opposition platform, has attracted a mix of former ruling party figures and other political actors into its structure.
