Why Obi, El-Rufai Have Not Officially Joined ADC – Party Explains

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai have not formally registered as members of the ADC due to ongoing commitments within their previous political parties. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi stated that both leaders were granted permission to resolve electoral matters, including by-elections and party nominations, in their legacy parties before transitioning fully into the ADC. Despite the delay in formal registration, Abdullahi emphasized that Obi and El-Rufai are already integral members of the ADC-led opposition coalition.

Meanwhile, there are strong indications that former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is expected to officially join the ADC on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Amaechi, who resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) three weeks ago, is anticipated to assume leadership of the ADC’s political structure in Rivers State. A flyer making the rounds on social media confirmed his visit to Port Harcourt on that date, though it did not disclose the event’s venue or time.

In a conversation with *LEADERSHIP*, a source close to Amaechi described the visit as part of a broader engagement with citizens and grassroots supporters. The source noted that this move marks a step forward in strengthening a collective vision for unity, progress, and responsible leadership.

Confirming Amaechi’s upcoming engagement, ADC’s Rivers State spokesman, Chief Luckyman Egila, stated that Amaechi is already recognized as the party leader in the state and will be meeting with the party’s leadership and members to deliberate on the future direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

On the subject of who would emerge as the party’s presidential candidate, Abdullahi reiterated that the ADC is committed to a transparent and democratic process with no anointed aspirants. He stressed that only registered, card-carrying members of the party—those who are not affiliated with any other political organization—are eligible to seek nominations for public office. This rule, detailed in Article 8 of the party’s constitution, underscores the importance of formal resignation from any previously held party memberships.

Addressing speculations about possible internal disputes or legal challenges, Abdullahi dismissed such concerns, affirming that the ADC remains on solid legal footing and is prepared to conduct its affairs in line with democratic principles.
