Why Nigeria is Participating in Joint Arab-Islamic Summit – FG

Nigeria has joined the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of its commitment to advocating for peace in the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Federal Government (FG) has confirmed. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that Nigeria’s participation is driven by its desire for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict, which he believes “can never end on the war front.”

The summit, which begins today, will bring together leaders from Middle Eastern and Islamic nations to address the region’s most urgent issues, particularly the Israel-Palestine conflict. President Bola Tinubu, representing Nigeria, is expected to call for an immediate ceasefire and urge a diplomatic solution.

Mr. Idris underscored that Nigeria’s stance is rooted in its longstanding relationship with the Middle East and its regional role. “Nigeria’s position is to call for a peaceful resolution,” he explained. “We believe that a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully within secure borders, is the only viable path forward.”

The conflict, reignited by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has led to heavy casualties and a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Over 41,000 people, primarily women and children, have reportedly been killed in Gaza since the escalation. International humanitarian organizations have warned of imminent famine in northern Gaza, which affects its 2.3 million residents, and have called for urgent assistance.

Mr. Idris stated that Nigeria’s active participation in the summit underscores its dedication to global peace and stability. “Without peace in the Middle East, countries around the world, including Nigeria, may face serious impacts,” he said. The Federal Government’s stance reinforces Nigeria’s position as an advocate for diplomacy on the world stage.
