Why I Quit Drinking Alcohol — Osinbajo Shares Turning Point in Viral Video

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed why he stopped drinking alcohol, describing the decision as a major turning point in his faith journey.

Speaking in a video circulating on social media, Osinbajo recounted how an encounter during a United Nations mission in Mogadishu, Somalia, led him to give up alcohol permanently.

He said that although he was already a pastor at the time, he occasionally drank red wine and beer.

According to him, the defining moment came after he preached at a fellowship service while serving in the justice sector of the UN mission. On his way back, he stopped at a restaurant intending to buy two cans of Heineken before returning to his room.

At the restaurant, he noticed some colleagues drinking, but they tried to hide their drinks when they saw him.

Curious about their reaction, he asked a Danish colleague why they acted that way.

The colleague reportedly replied, “You are the priest, and we cannot be drinking around the priest.”

Osinbajo said the comment prompted deep reflection about his conduct and spiritual example.

He said the experience reshaped his understanding of the biblical principle that not everything permissible is beneficial.

“Since that day, I have never consumed alcohol,” he said.

The former vice president described the moment as one that influenced both his personal convictions and

spiritual discipline.
