Why Channels TV Crew Was Removed from Government House — Gov. Eno Explains

Akwa-Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has addressed reports surrounding the removal of Channels TV correspondent Chris Mofatt and his cameraman from the Government House press corps. Contrary to claims of an eviction, Governor Eno explained that the action was a routine change of correspondents initiated by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS), not a punitive measure. He emphasized that such changes are standard practice globally and are often made after correspondents have served extended periods, sometimes up to ten years. The governor noted that the decision to rotate media personnel falls under the CPS’s authority and does not require his direct involvement.

Governor Eno assured that Channels TV continues to have access to Government House, citing that the station was still covering live events that same afternoon. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working collaboratively with all media organizations, recognizing the vital role of the press in nation-building.

The incident followed the airing of a video by Channels TV showing Governor Eno’s announcement of his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In reaction, lawyer and activist Inebehe Effiong expressed surprise at the governor’s apparent displeasure over the broadcast, noting that Channels TV would have only covered the event if invited.
