“What a Waste” — Nigerians Criticize Tinubu’s Appointment of 13 Media Aides Over Redundancy, Governance Costs

President Bola Tinubu’s growing list of media aides has ignited widespread criticism on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over what they see as wasteful and redundant appointments.

The backlash followed the Thursday announcement of Daniel Bwala, a former aide to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as the President’s Special Adviser on Public Communications and Media. Bwala’s addition brought the total number of Tinubu’s media-related advisers to 13.

The list, shared online by 36 Kiniun, a user on the social platform X (formerly Twitter), outlined the various portfolios of the President’s media aides. The reaction was swift, with several users accusing the administration of contradicting its pledge to reduce the cost of governance.

Critics highlighted the perceived overlap in the responsibilities of the appointees.

“These people do the same thing. Check their timelines — all the same tweets. What a waste,” an X user identified as Obum remarked, calling the roles redundant.

Another user, Streams, described the appointments as excessive, saying: “There are a lot of very unnecessary appointments here. One person can do like three of these roles and still have a lot of time on their hands. But appointment for here na reward, and that’s why you can see a lot of people on this street fighting to be seen.”
