We’ll Shutdown Power Sector if NLC President is Arrested, NUEE Warns
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has warned of a potential shutdown in Nigeria’s power sector if Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is arrested. The warning follows an invitation by the Nigerian Police Force’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) for Ajaero to answer questions regarding alleged charges of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
In a statement, NUEE’s Acting General Secretary, Igwebike Dominic, criticized the government for what he described as politically motivated harassment. Dominic accused the federal authorities of attempting to stifle labor movements and free speech through intimidation and unlawful actions. He condemned the government’s approach as an abuse of the Nigerian Constitution and international labor conventions.
Dominic’s statement underscored the union’s dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of labor issues and its disregard for the NLC’s recent grievances. He called on NUEE members nationwide to prepare for a potential strike if Ajaero is detained, urging caution from the federal government amidst growing public discontent due to inflation and economic hardship.
The NUEE stressed the importance of respecting citizens’ rights and warned of severe repercussions should Ajaero’s arrest occur.
