“We Won’t Allow Disruption of Rivers LG Elections,” – Ijaw Youth Council
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has issued a strong statement pledging to resist any attempts to disrupt the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, scheduled for Saturday, October 5.
In a press conference held in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers, IYC President Theophilus Alaye emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process, despite ongoing protests and counter-protests surrounding the elections.
“We, as Ijaw youths, will not allow any individuals or groups to disrupt the upcoming local government elections,” Alaye declared. He praised the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), stating that it possesses the necessary resources to conduct the election effectively.
Alaye expressed pride in the contributions of the Ijaw people, stating, “We are laying the golden egg to feed this country, and we won’t allow anyone to disrespect our humble and peaceful son, the executive governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.”
The IYC president raised concerns over conflicting court rulings aimed at halting the elections, calling it “very unfortunate.” He urged the Nigeria Police, the principal security agency during elections, to support the Rivers State government in maintaining order during the electoral process.
Additionally, Alaye called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold its constitutional responsibilities by providing all necessary information to the RSIEC to facilitate a credible election. He cautioned judges against being influenced by political interests.
