We Don’t Want Nigeria Becoming One-Party State — APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns that recent defections from opposition parties are part of a plan to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. Speaking on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the APC has no intention of undermining Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

Morka noted that during its time in power, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled more than 28 states, yet it was not accused of seeking to eliminate opposition. He argued that members of the PDP and Labour Party joining the APC are simply expressing their desire to align with the ruling party’s vision and political direction.

“Many of these people are coming in and saying, we want to be part of the process. We want to identify with that process. There’s nothing wrong with that,” Morka said. “That does not mean that we desire for Nigeria to then become a one-party system.”

He emphasized that Nigeria’s Constitution, the Electoral Act, and other laws firmly establish the country as a multiparty democracy, making any attempt to shift toward a single-party system unrealistic and contrary to legal norms. “To do that, you have to change a lot, which is nearly impossible to change,” he added.

Morka maintained that the APC is focused on strengthening its internal structure and governance, not eroding democratic plurality. He said the party’s priority remains self-preservation and stability rather than dismantling political competition.
