“We Are Set to Launch Four Satellites to Boost Security, Earth Observation — Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation

Nigeria is set to launch four new satellites aimed at enhancing national security and improving earth observation capabilities, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, announced on Wednesday. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the deployment of three earth observation satellites and one radar aperture satellite, a move expected to bolster efforts against insecurity in the country.

Speaking at the 22nd National Council on Innovation, Science and Technology (NCIST) meeting in Abuja, Minister Nnaji emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, which seeks to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges. He highlighted the strategic importance of the satellites, especially the radar aperture satellite, which will provide continuous imaging support valuable for military operations in difficult terrains such as the Sambisa Forest.

The minister also discussed ongoing efforts to update the national science, technology, and innovation policy. An inter-ministerial committee is currently reviewing the policy and working on establishing a national research and innovation fund. Nnaji stressed the need to bridge the gap between research and its practical applications, calling for stronger connections between research institutions, industry, and market innovation. He encouraged a cultural shift where innovation is seen as a viable career path for students and where local inventions reach commercialization.

Permanent Secretary Esuabana Nko-Asanye described the council meeting as a critical call to action aimed at fostering collaboration across sectors to build a prosperous Nigeria. She noted that 109 memoranda were presented, covering a wide range of issues including the commercialization of indigenous research, improving funding mechanisms, and developing capacity in emerging technologies.
