“We Are Reviewing the Sequence of Events” — House of Representatives on 2025 Tax Laws Discrepancies
The Nigerian House of Representatives has launched a formal review following concerns over differences between the 2025 tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions published in the Official Gazette.
Akin Rotimi, House Spokesman and Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, confirmed that a seven-member Ad Hoc Committee has been set up to examine the matter after a lawmaker raised it under a Point of Order.
“The Ad Hoc Committee, in collaboration with other relevant committees and the National Assembly’s management, is reviewing the sequence of legislative and administrative events,” Rotimi said.
The review aims to identify any lapses, irregularities, or external influences in the handling of the Acts. Rotimi stressed that the process is procedural and does not imply any defect in the legislative authority of either the House or the Senate.
As part of corrective measures, the National Assembly has directed that the Acts be re-gazetted. Certified True Copies will be issued to ensure the official record accurately reflects the versions passed by both Chambers.
The review follows public scrutiny of four major tax laws: the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025; the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025; the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025; and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025. Observers noted inconsistencies between the published Gazette versions and the bills passed by the National Assembly.
The Ad Hoc Committee, supported by other committees and management, is examining legislative and administrative procedures to clarify the discrepancies and protect the integrity of the legislative record.
