“We Are Not Barren”: Edo Governor’s Wife Betsy Obaseki Offers Hope to Childless Women
The First Lady of Edo State, Betsy Obaseki, has offered words of comfort to women struggling with childlessness, urging them not to see themselves as barren, but as “fruitful, potential mothers” who will have children in God’s time.
Mrs. Obaseki made these remarks during a Zoom meeting with Edo women living abroad, where she was joined by Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, wife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo. The meeting came in the wake of a recent viral video where Senator Adams Oshiomhole made comments regarding Betsy Obaseki’s childlessness, following her statement at a rally in Igueben.
Addressing the diaspora women, the governor’s wife encouraged them to embrace hope, drawing from her personal experiences. “Like myself, who have conceived, suffered miscarriages, stillbirths, and loss of babies, I want you to know—you are not barren. I dare to call you fruitful. We are all proud mothers-to-be, in God’s time,” she said.
She encouraged the women to focus on their life’s blessings, emphasizing that motherhood is not solely biological but also about leaving a positive impact on society. “Take your mind off your challenges, and before you know it, children will come. But remember, being fruitful is not just about bearing children, it’s about touching lives and fulfilling God’s purpose in many ways.”
Ifeyinwa Ighodalo expressed gratitude to the women for their participation and assured them that she would continue Betsy Obaseki’s programs supporting women and girls if her husband, Asue Ighodalo, is elected governor.
Mrs. Adesuwa Obasohan, founder of the group hosting the event, welcomed the participants and pledged the group’s support for Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy, just as they had supported the current governor, Godwin Obaseki.
