Visa Ban: DHQ Reacts to Allegations of Military Seeking Visas to ‘Watch’ Invictus Games
The Defence Headquarters has urged Nigerians to dismiss allegations that the Nigerian military sought visas merely to watch the Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada. In a statement on Monday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, described the claims as baseless and called for support for the armed forces in their efforts to enhance national security and promote the welfare of servicemen and women.
Gusau clarified that the Nigerian military received an invitation to participate in the Invictus Games with a team comprising three officers and 21 players, including a physiotherapist. He explained that the Invictus Games Foundation provided accommodation and feeding for the team, alongside other participating nations. However, despite efforts to secure travel authorization, only 14 members of the team were granted visas, while the team leader, captain, and physiotherapist were among those denied entry.
He expressed disappointment that seven athletes who had the potential to excel were unable to compete due to visa issues. Despite this setback, the Nigerian team delivered an outstanding performance, securing gold, silver, and bronze medals and proudly representing both the nation and Africa on the global stage of the Invictus Games.
Gusau further highlighted that the participation of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, would have provided additional mental strength to the troops. He emphasized that General Musa has spearheaded several initiatives to boost the morale of service personnel, including the construction of Africa’s first Invictus Foundation Centre. This facility, currently under development, aims to provide essential care and mental healing for wounded military personnel.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to supporting injured servicemen and women and called on Nigerians to focus on accurate information rather than unfounded allegations. The military continues to work towards securing opportunities that honor and uplift the sacrifices of its personnel.
