Violence Escalates: 145 Lives Lost in Bandit Onslaught Across Plateau Villages
In a horrific wave of violence, at least 145 individuals lost their lives in a series of bandit attacks across 23 villages in Plateau State. The assailants targeted communities in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas, leaving devastation in their wake.
The attacks unfolded from Saturday night through the early hours of Monday, resulting in widespread casualties and property destruction. Notable affected areas include Ruku, Hurum, Darwat, Mai Yanga Sabo, and NTV villages in the Gashish and Ropp districts.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Bokkos LGA, Monday Kassah, confirmed the tragic incident, revealing that 113 lives were lost in Bokkos and 32 in Barkin Ladi. Over 300 individuals sustained injuries, with some rushed to hospitals in Jos, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos.
Security forces, including Operation Safe Haven, responded to the crisis, with Captain Oya James confirming the attacks but unable to provide casualty figures. However, Kassah reported the recovery of 113 bodies from the affected communities.
Expressing outrage, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the attacks as barbaric and directed security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators swiftly. He urged communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
Residents shared harrowing tales of the assaults, with one individual recounting how his mother and brother were injured during the attacks. The Berom Youth Moulders-Association labeled the incidents as acts of terrorism, calling for international intervention and government action.
Tragically, this is not the first instance of violence in Plateau State. Over 100 lives were lost earlier this year, contributing to a grim tally of 201 deaths in seven local government areas from January to June. The ethno-religious crisis that began in 2001 continues to plague the region.
As the nation mourns the loss of lives, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, urged Nigerians to unite against common enemies. He emphasized collective responsibility in tackling security challenges, urging citizens to support efforts to ensure the nation’s peace and progress.
The aftermath of these attacks highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of recurring violence in Plateau State and promote lasting peace.
