Victor Osimhen moves from Lille to Napoli
Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles forward, has joined Napoli, a top club in Italy, on a five-year deal.
The 21-year-old striker linked up with the Serie A side from Lille, a French Ligue 1 club, for an undisclosed fee.
Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli president, announced Osimhen’s arrival to the club on his Twitter page on Friday afternoon.
The Serie A side also welcomed the Eagles striker in a statement on its official website.
The former Vfl Wolfsburg player is seen by the Gennaro Gattuso side as a capable replacement for Arkadiusz Milik, a Poland striker, who has been linked with a move to Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.
It is believed that he will wear jersey number 9, which has been donned by some of the club’s former greats including Gonzalo Higuaín, Gianfranco Zola, Daniel Fonseca, Nicola Amoruso and Simone Verdi.
Osimhen scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 38 games across all competitions for Lille during the 2019/2020 campaign. He was also voted the club’s player of the year.
The former Wolfsburg striker was named as the Best African Striker in Ligue1 for year 2020.
Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles technical adviser, had earlier advised the talented forward to join a club where he’ll get regular playtime.
“He is a guy who loves to work hard and who needs to be in constant competition. I hope Victor talks about it with Gattuso and can then find the right role within the Napoli project,” Rohr told Marco Gordiano of Radio Punto Nuovo.
“Victor has a great player mentality. And often, in our chats, I advised him to take an important step and go to a level club, where he can find the right space to play continuously and grow.”
