Vatican Reportedly Rehearsing Pope Francis’ Funeral After Warning He May Not Survive Pneumonia

The Vatican is reportedly preparing for the funeral of Pope Francis as concerns grow over his health following a severe bout of pneumonia. According to Swiss newspaper *Blick*, members of the Swiss Guard have been placed under curfew as they rehearse for the pontiff’s possible passing.

Pope Francis, 88, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday after experiencing significant chest pain. Reports indicate that he had resisted leaving the Vatican for several days before being rushed to the hospital. Medical examinations confirmed a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, which led to double pneumonia. Given his medical history, including the removal of part of his lung many years ago, the situation is particularly serious.

The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that the Pope’s condition involves asthmatic bronchitis and that he is undergoing cortisone antibiotic treatment. While officials have stated that he is not running a fever, medical experts caution that this might not necessarily be a positive sign. Dr. Carmelo D’Asero, an infectious disease specialist in Rome, explained that a high fever is a typical immune response, and its absence could indicate a weakened immune system.

Despite the Vatican’s reassurances, sources close to the Pope have suggested that Francis himself is deeply aware of the gravity of his condition. According to a *Politico* report, two individuals who have spoken with him claim he confided that he “might not make it this time.” His words have prompted an outpouring of concern, with crowds gathering at the hospital in western Rome to pray for his recovery.

Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri, 81, commented on the Pope’s demeanor during this health crisis, telling broadcaster Rai, “Francis is very calm. His helm is in the hands of the Lord.”

The Vatican has not disclosed details on how Francis is responding to treatment or how long he is expected to remain hospitalized. Officials have only stated that managing such a “complex clinical picture” requires an “adequate” stay, with treatment adjustments already being made.

The Pope had previously revealed that he had prepared his tomb, which is set to deviate from traditional burial practices. With rehearsals for his funeral reportedly underway, concerns over his health continue to grow. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether he can recover from this latest health setback.
