US-Lagos Flight Diverted to Togo Over Bad Weather; Female Passenger Dies Mid-Flight
A female passenger died during a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta, United States, to Lagos, Nigeria. The aircraft was diverted to Lome, Togo, due to bad weather, leading to significant delays and refueling complications.
According to Delta Air Lines, the diversion was necessary due to adverse weather conditions in Nigeria. The flight, which was carrying 215 passengers, faced considerable delays upon arrival in Lome, resulting in an almost eight-and-a-half-hour delay in reaching Lagos.
A press statement from Delta confirmed the incident, stating that the diversion was required due to both a medical emergency and the need for refueling. The statement also expressed apologies to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the diversion and delays.
A Nigerian passenger aboard the flight, @samson_Goddy, shared his account of the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter. He mentioned that two medical emergencies occurred during the flight, one of which involved a woman who died mid-flight, possibly from a heart attack. This prompted the diversion to Lome, where the aircraft landed for refueling and weather considerations.
Delta’s statement read, “Delta flight 54 ATL-LOS has landed safely in LOS after an onboard customer medical situation and subsequent diversion to LFW due to weather. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travel plans.”
The original flight was scheduled to arrive in Lagos at 10 a.m. on Monday but did not arrive until 6 p.m. or later due to the delays and diversion. Despite the delays and tragic events, the airline ensured that passengers were compensated for the inconvenience.
Delta Air Lines concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to customer safety and addressing any disruptions caused by unforeseen circumstances during flights.
