US Astronauts, Originally Scheduled for 8-Day Mission, Stuck in Space Until 2025 Due to Technical Issues

NASA has announced that astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, initially scheduled for an eight-day mission aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, may remain in space until early 2025 due to technical problems with the spacecraft.

The Starliner’s maiden voyage to the International Space Station (ISS) has been marred by unexpected delays, primarily stemming from helium leaks and thruster failures. As a result, the astronauts’ return journey has been extended indefinitely.

NASA is now considering a contingency plan involving SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission, which is slated to launch in February 2025. If further tests reveal that returning on the Starliner could be too risky, the astronauts might be rescued by SpaceX’s CrewDragon spacecraft.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program manager, Steve Stich, stated that a decision regarding the backup plan will likely be made by mid-August. He emphasized that ensuring the astronauts’ safety remains the top priority.

Wilmore and Williams were originally set to spend eight days in space following their launch on June 6. However, the technical issues encountered have forced NASA and Boeing to seek solutions urgently, with the potential for SpaceX to play a critical role in their return.
