Uromi Killings: Fear of Reprisal Attacks Grows in Sokoto as Shops Shut, Streets Deserted

Tension has gripped Sokoto State following the recent killing of 16 Hausa hunters in Uromi, Edo State, allegedly by local vigilantes and youths. The incident, which occurred last Thursday, has sparked widespread fear of reprisal attacks, prompting precautionary measures across the state.

On Friday, many parts of Sokoto metropolis appeared deserted, especially key commercial areas such as Bello Way, Emir Yahya Road, Sahara, and Aliyu Jodi. Shops remained shut, and public activity was minimal as residents responded to growing security concerns.

Contrary to initial reports suggesting that only Igbo-owned businesses were targeted for closure, local trader Buhari Haruna Illelah confirmed that the directive affected everyone. “The police came to us and asked us to lock our shops and go home. I didn’t see any youth or armed people, but I’m currently at home,” he said. He noted that rumors of possible attacks by unknown youths contributed to the voluntary retreat indoors by many.

The shutdown is seen as a preventive step aimed at avoiding any escalation of violence, as security forces intensify patrols and visibility across the city. Since news of the killings broke, anxiety has grown in several Northern states over potential retaliatory actions.

Security agencies are reportedly working around the clock to ease tensions and prevent unrest. Civil society groups and community leaders have also stepped in, urging residents to remain calm and pursue justice through legal and peaceful means.

As of the time of this report, there have been no confirmed protests or violent incidents in Sokoto, but the atmosphere remains uneasy. Increased security presence is evident in strategic parts of the city, as residents watch developments with caution.
