UNN Student Arrested for Murder of Female Undergraduate in Nsukka Hotel

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has been rocked by a disturbing development as police arrested a 200-level student, Emmanuel Gambo, for the murder of 22-year-old Deborah Sam-Praise Ememem in a hotel located in Obukpa, Nsukka.

Gambo, a student of Material and Metallurgical Engineering from Kogi State, was apprehended following an intelligence-led investigation by the Enugu State Police Command. The investigation began after hotel staff discovered Ememem’s decomposing body hidden beneath a bed, wrapped in a towel and curtain, two days after the incident.

According to police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, Gambo and the victim had checked into the hotel on the night of June 14, 2025. After two rounds of sexual activity, an argument reportedly broke out when Ememem demanded an additional ₦15,000 on top of the ₦5,000 they had initially agreed upon. The dispute escalated, and Gambo allegedly strangled her to death.

In an effort to conceal the crime, he left a false name and unreachable phone number at the hotel before fleeing the scene. Despite these attempts, detectives traced him to his lodge in Nsukka and arrested him on July 2. He has since confessed to the murder.

During the arrest, police recovered Ememem’s iPhone, Redmi tablet, earbuds, and a bottle of red wine she had brought to the hotel. Gambo had tried to discard the items by throwing them out in a bag.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, commended the swift work of the investigators and emphasized that justice will be pursued to its full extent. He also urged parents to pay closer attention to their children’s activities and warned young people against engaging in social vices and negative peer influence.

The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
