Unlicensed Nurse Arrested After Young Woman Dies from Alleged Wrongful Treatment

Police operatives from the Ekpan Division in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State have arrested an auxiliary nurse, Mrs. Odiase Ibhade Stella, in connection with the death of 21-year-old Miss Elizabeth Oyibode. The arrest followed a petition regarding Oyibode’s sudden health complications and eventual death, allegedly caused by unauthorized medical treatment administered by Stella.

According to reports, Oyibode died at the Central Hospital, Warri, three days ago after suffering severe complications from medications and intravenous treatment given to her by the auxiliary nurse. Authorities have also sealed off Stella’s chemist shop, located near New Era School off Jakpa Road.

Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, National Coordinator of the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA), also known as “No Justice, No Peace,” confirmed the development. He stated that the incident came to light after Stella allegedly treated Oyibode and her fiancé, Mr. Jonathan Okuma, for a suspected bacterial infection without proper medical qualifications or diagnostic procedures. Stella reportedly convinced Mr. Okuma to involve his fiancée in the treatment, citing their cohabitation and shared health risks.

According to Agberen, the auxiliary nurse later diagnosed Oyibode with typhoid and malaria and insisted on treating her simultaneously with the bacterial infection. Mr. Okuma reportedly objected to this but was ignored. He recounted that money sent for diagnostic tests was instead used by Stella to administer intravenous drips and medication, which eventually led to Oyibode’s paralysis and subsequent death.

Comrade Agberen praised the swift intervention of CSP Shaba Aliyu, the Divisional Police Officer at Ekpan Division, for acting promptly on ISRCA’s petition. He emphasized that the organization will ensure the case sets a precedent against illegal medical practices and unlicensed practitioners.
