Unknown Gunmen Attack Enugu Market, Injuring Many and Destroying Goods Worth Millions

An assault by unknown gunmen on Nkwo Ibagwa market in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State has left numerous people injured and goods worth millions of naira destroyed. The assailants, enforcing a sit-at-home order in commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day on May 30, caused widespread devastation on Wednesday.

The attackers burned at least two commercial buses and two tricycles, leaving charred remains scattered throughout the market. This violent incident has instilled fear among residents and traders, who are now tallying their losses.

In response to the attack, military checkpoints have been established across major streets and roads in Enugu metropolis, resulting in significant traffic congestion. Armoured Personnel Carriers have been deployed to strategic locations, including Emene, Eke-obinagu, Abakpa Junction, Trans-Ekulu, Garriki, Holy Ghost, Ogui Junction, and New Heaven Junction. This increased military presence aims to reassure the public that they are safe to ignore the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Despite efforts to obtain comments, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, was unavailable for comment.
