University of Nigeria Suspends Lecturer for Alleged Sexual Harassment of Female Student

The University of Nigeria (UNN) Nsukka has suspended Mr. Mfonobong David Udoudom, a lecturer in the General Studies division, following allegations of sexual harassment involving a female student. The suspension is effective immediately, pending the outcome of a disciplinary panel’s investigation into the incident.

The controversy began when a video surfaced, allegedly showing Udoudom harassing a female student, who is reported to be a married woman. According to sources, the lecturer demanded sexual favors in exchange for passing his course, despite the student’s efforts to offer monetary compensation instead.

Following the incident, the victim’s husband lodged a formal complaint with university authorities, prompting a response from the university’s administration. The acting Public Relations Officer, Dr. Okwun Omeaku, stated that the suspension is part of the university’s commitment to a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual misconduct.

“We are committed to protecting our students from any form of abuse and exploitation,” said Omeaku. “The University Management will not hesitate to punish Mr. Mfonobong David Udoudom according to our rules, if he is found guilty by our disciplinary panel.” He further emphasized that the university has a strict Sexual Harassment Policy, which governs relationships between staff and students, as well as interactions among staff members.

The incident has sparked outrage across the university community, with many students and faculty members condemning the lecturer’s behavior and calling for swift action. In response to the public outcry, UNN has assured stakeholders that it will take all necessary steps to ensure justice is served.
