Police Launch Probe as Kogi University Lecturer Dies During ‘Sexathon’ with 200-Level Student

Authorities in Kogi State have launched a formal investigation after a senior lecturer at Kogi State University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, died during a sexual encounter with a 200-level female student in a hotel room. The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, and was reported to the Anyigba Police Division the following day.

Dr. Ibikunle, a married man and father, was a respected academic in the university but also faced longstanding allegations of sexually exploiting female students for academic favours. On the day of the incident, he reportedly checked into a hotel with 22-year-old Gloria Samuel, a second-year student from the Department of Social Studies Education.

Sources close to the matter allege that the lecturer consumed multiple energy drinks prior to the encounter, presumably to enhance sexual performance. During the act, he reportedly collapsed and became unresponsive.

The hotel manager, identified as Moses Friday, said the student rushed to the reception in a panic, claiming that the lecturer had slumped after sex. The hotel staff immediately contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who arrived at the scene and arranged for the lecturer to be taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the incident and said the student had been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

“The report was received on July 16, although the incident happened on the 15th. The girl told hotel staff that the lecturer slumped after they had sex. He was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead,” Aya said.

An autopsy has been conducted, though the police have not yet released the results. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of death and whether foul play was involved.
