University of Abuja Names 41-Year-Old Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi Acting Vice-Chancellor

The University of Abuja has named Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as its acting Vice-Chancellor. Her appointment was revealed during the university’s valedictory Senate meeting held on campus in Abuja on Wednesday.

Professor Maikudi, a 41-year-old expert in International Law, previously held the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics. Her new role comes as Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, concludes his tenure in three days. Maikudi’s appointment is interim, awaiting formal approval by the Governing Council.

In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed profound gratitude to the Senate members for their trust and support. “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me,” she remarked.

Born on January 31, 1983, Maikudi holds the distinction of being the youngest female Professor of Law in Northwestern Nigeria and at UniAbuja. Her academic journey began at Queens College in Lagos, where she earned her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). She then pursued higher education at the University of Reading, obtaining an LLB in 2004, followed by an LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005. She completed her PhD in International Law from UniAbuja in 2015.

Joining the University of Abuja as Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, Maikudi climbed the academic ranks to become a professor in 2022. She made history as the first female Deputy Dean of the university’s Faculty of Law in 2018 and later served as the pioneer director of the UniAbuja International Centre in 2019.

Maikudi’s professional achievements include attending numerous national and international conferences across the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt. She has also conducted extensive research on United Nations Law and has published widely in the field. Her professional affiliations encompass membership in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
