United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Return to Lagos, Passengers Injured

A United Airlines flight bound for Washington Dulles International Airport made an emergency return to Lagos on Thursday after experiencing a technical fault mid-air.

The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, registered as N27903, had just departed for Washington, D.C., when the crew declared an emergency, prompting the captain to turn back. The flight, designated UA613, maintained the international distress transponder code 7700 until it landed safely in Lagos.

On board were 245 passengers, 80 flight attendants, and three pilots. Several passengers reportedly sustained injuries due to turbulence, with videos and images from inside the aircraft showing food trays and luggage scattered across the cabin.

While the exact cause of the emergency has not been officially confirmed, some passengers suspected an engine-related issue. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the cause.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the incident, assuring that affected passengers had been accommodated in hotels as required by regulations.

United Airlines acknowledged the emergency in a statement, attributing it to a “technical issue.” The airline noted that first responders met the aircraft upon landing to assist passengers and crew with minor injuries.
