UNILAG Postpones Governing Council Meeting After ASUU’s Threat

The Management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has postponed its governing council meeting billed to hold today to Friday.

In a statement on Tuesday by the Registrar, Oladejo Azeez, said the Pro Chancellor, Dr. Wale Babalakin, authorized the postponement.

The letter read in part: “I have been directed by the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Dr. Bolanle Babalakin (SAN), to inform council members that the special meeting scheduled for Wednesday, July 15 to Friday, July 17, 2020, has been postponed.

“Certain issues have arisen that require consideration that will make it impossible to hold the meeting. For this reason, the meeting will be postponed to a more suitable time. Council members will be given appropriate notice in accordance with the standing rules about council meetings.”

The postponement is not unconnected with threats by the University’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to disrupt the meeting should Babalakin attend. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe was said to have written Babalakin on the dangers of holding physical meeting at this time.

Babalakin had been at loggerheads with lecturers following his role in the postponement of the University’s convocation ceremony earlier in the year.
