UGM Attack Military Checkpoint in Ebonyi: Police Confirm Incident

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed an attack on a military checkpoint along the Amangwu axis of the Amasiri-Owutu Federal Road in the Edda Local Government Area. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Police Spokesperson.

Ukandu reported that unidentified assailants on motorcycles launched a surprise attack on the checkpoint, firing sporadically. While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, local sources suggest fatalities on both sides.

A community source, who requested anonymity, revealed, “A soldier was killed, and one of the attackers was also neutralized by the military during the confrontation.”

The attack created panic in the local community, causing significant delays for motorists and commuters on the federal road, who had to wait for the situation to stabilize before continuing their journeys.

Community leaders have condemned the attack, labeling the perpetrators as enemies of the state. Chief Orji Ama, an elder in the community, expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. “This is the first attack we have witnessed in the past two years. Our community recently celebrated seven months of peace and unity,” he said.

Chief Ama highlighted the positive impact of the military presence in maintaining peace in the area and called for swift action against the attackers. “Edda is a peaceful community, and we will not allow anyone to disrupt this peace,” he stated.

Chief James Chima, another community leader, echoed these sentiments, describing the attack as a sabotage of the local peace and security. “We will support the security agencies in protecting the lives and properties of our people,” he asserted. Chima stressed that the community would resist any efforts to undermine its hard-earned stability.
