U.S. Policy Firm to Brief Congress, Trump Administration on INEC’s Suspension of ADC Leadership
A U.S.-based policy firm, Von Batten-Montague York L.C., says it will brief members of United States Congress and the administration of Donald Trump on the decision by Nigeria’s electoral body to suspend recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The move follows recent action by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which withdrew recognition of the ADC leadership and halted official engagement with the party pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.
The decision has effectively stalled the activities of a major opposition party at a critical stage ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential election.
In a statement released on Friday, the firm said INEC’s action raises concerns about democratic participation and the credibility of the electoral process. It noted that suspending engagement with the party could limit its ability to organise and participate fully in the election cycle.
The firm also pointed to the timing of the decision, describing it as significant given public expectations for a credible vote. It said developments that disrupt political participation or create uncertainty around electoral institutions require prompt and transparent resolution.
Highlighting Nigeria’s geopolitical role, the firm described the country as a key partner to the United States in areas including regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. It added that the integrity of Nigeria’s elections has broader international implications.
According to the statement, the planned engagement in Washington is intended to keep Nigeria’s democratic process under international scrutiny and ensure continued attention to electoral standards.
The firm also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that upcoming elections are credible and reflect the will of voters.
