“U.S. Disappointed the World by Re-electing Trump” – Bolaji Akinyemi
Renowned Nigerian political scientist, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has expressed sharp criticism of the United States, saying the country’s choice to re-elect Donald Trump has left the world disillusioned. Akinyemi made these remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, following Trump’s victory over Vice-President Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election.
Trump’s unexpected win comes after President Joe Biden stepped down, opening the path for Harris to run as the Democratic candidate. However, voters ultimately favored Trump, a decision that Akinyemi argues signals a troubling turn for the United States on the global stage.
“Americans have truly descended to a new low,” Akinyemi said in the interview. “The United States has disgraced itself and disappointed the global community with this electoral decision.”
Akinyemi voiced particular concerns for countries like Ukraine and Palestine, citing Trump’s close ties with Russia and Israel as potentially detrimental to these regions. “Trump’s foreign alliances spell tough times for these nations,” he noted, pointing to the contentious relationships these allies have with Ukraine and Palestine.
Further, the professor warned of Trump’s inclination to implement what he described as a “hardline” agenda. “If he proceeds with his rhetoric, America could shock the world,” Akinyemi cautioned. He speculated that Trump’s policies might involve mobilizing U.S. forces against those he considers adversaries and intensifying immigration crackdowns.
“There is still the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba—a grim legacy that previous administrations have tried to close,” he remarked. “President Biden attempted to shut it down, but Republicans blocked those efforts.”
