Two Killed, One Arrested in Rival Cult Clash in Anambra
A violent clash between rival cult groups in the Nkwelle-Ezunaka community of Anambra State has left two people dead and several injured, according to the Anambra State Police Command. The incident, which occurred in the Oyi Local Government Area, involved members of the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities, whose long-standing rivalry has increasingly threatened to spiral out of control.
One suspected member of the Black Axe group was arrested by the police following the confrontation. While his identity has not been disclosed, police sources confirmed he sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle during the clash. During interrogation, the suspect admitted his affiliation with the Black Axe group and named several alleged accomplices, including Simon Mmadukwe, Nwachukwu Oluebube Emmanuel, Somto Ikpe, Jude Nwali, Ifeanyi Uzor, and Chibuzor Obineke.
He also claimed the Eiye group had vowed to wipe out the Black Axe confraternity, prompting many of his fellow members to flee the state out of fear for their lives. Some, he said, have relocated to other parts of Nigeria, while others have fled the continent entirely, especially those coerced into joining the group or still undergoing initiation.
Although the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident, a senior officer who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the details. The officer noted that the violence has heightened fear in the community, with residents growing increasingly anxious over public safety.
In response, security forces have intensified efforts to track down all individuals involved in the deadly confrontation. Authorities assure the public that steps are being taken to restore calm and ensure justice is served.
