Two Dispatch Riders Killed as Trucks Collide on Eko Bridge

Two dispatch riders were killed on Sunday morning following a tragic collision involving two fully loaded Mack trucks on Eko Bridge, inward the Alaka corridor. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred when one of the truck drivers, allegedly speeding and dozing off at the wheel, lost control of his vehicle. The resulting impact caused a 20-foot container to dislodge and fall onto the two dispatch riders, crushing them instantly.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement issued through the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo. He revealed that the two trucks involved bore registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM. The tragic scene prompted a swift response from LASTMA officers stationed nearby, who managed to rescue one seriously injured truck driver and transport him to a hospital using a Lagos State Government ambulance.

However, the other two truck drivers reportedly fled the scene in the immediate aftermath of the crash. Authorities have launched an investigation to trace and apprehend the fleeing suspects. LASTMA also swiftly cordoned off the accident site and redirected traffic through the Costain Roundabout to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of other road users.

Mr. Bakare-Oki expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as deeply sorrowful. He stressed the importance of responsible driving, especially for operators of heavy-duty vehicles, and urged all drivers to remain alert and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out.

He also highlighted LASTMA’s continuous public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting safe driving practices across the state. Other emergency responders at the scene included the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNSC), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and personnel from the Iporin Police Division.
