Two Children Killed, Nine Injured in Knife Attack at Dance Class

A horrific knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport on Monday has resulted in the deaths of two children and left nine others injured, six critically. The incident occurred at a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class at the Hart Space, a studio known for hosting a variety of family-oriented classes.

Merseyside police chief constable Serena Kennedy described the attack as “ferocious.” The assailant, armed with a knife, entered the class at approximately 11:47 am and began attacking the children. Two adults, who were attempting to protect the children, are also in critical condition.

The suspect, a 17-year-old boy from Banks, Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The motive for the attack remains unclear, although it is not currently being treated as terrorism-related.

In the immediate aftermath, the scene was declared a major incident. Thirteen ambulances and specialist trauma teams were dispatched to the Hart Space, while Alder Hey Children’s Hospital also declared a major incident due to the influx of patients.

Witnesses described chaotic and harrowing scenes. Local resident Alaina Riley recounted how her aunt saw “little kids run out screaming covered in blood” and parents desperately trying to resuscitate their injured children. Business owners nearby also described children fleeing the studio, some collapsing on the pavement outside.

Emergency services cordoned off the area and provided immediate care to the victims. Specialist officers are now supporting the families of the deceased and injured children, while wider trauma support is being offered to the affected community.

The incident has prompted an outpouring of grief and shock. King Charles expressed his “most heartfelt condolences” to the families and loved ones of the victims, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack as “truly awful” and praised the emergency services for their swift response.

Merseyside’s police and crime commissioner, Emily Spurrell, called the attack “unthinkable and absolutely abhorrent,” expressing deep sadness over the loss of young lives.
