Turji Flees as Troops Eliminate His Deputy, Dozens of Bandits in Zamfara
Bello Turji, one of Nigeria’s most notorious bandit leaders, has fled to Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State following a relentless military offensive by troops under Operation Fansan Yamma. The operation has dealt a significant blow to his criminal network, with security forces confirming the elimination of his second-in-command, Aminu Kanawa, along with several other key associates.
Kanawa, known for orchestrating violent attacks in Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni local government areas across Zamfara and Sokoto states, was killed during an assault on a high ground in Fakai. His death marks a major victory for security forces battling banditry in the region.
Additionally, the military operation led to the deaths of several other top figures in Turji’s group, including Dosso, his younger brother, and Danbokolo, a close ally. Another critical engagement in Gebe, Isa LGA of Sokoto State, saw the successful elimination of multiple fleeing bandits, among them notorious commanders such as Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna, also known as Kahon-Saniya-yafi-Bahaushe.
Local intelligence reports indicate that Turji’s loyalists have been moving through Galadi, Damaga, Rudunu, and Danbenchi, transporting wounded members towards Garsa/Kadanya in the Bayan Ruwa axis. There are concerns that some of his fighters are regrouping in strongholds like Rudunu, Bankamawa, and Farfaru. The Bayan Ruwa axis, a known terrorist corridor, was previously targeted in Nigerian Air Force airstrikes in August 2024.
Sources have also revealed that some of Turji’s surviving fighters may have taken refuge in Garsa/Kadanya under the protection of Jummo Smally, a former rival turned ally. The nature of their alliance remains unclear, raising fears of further criminal activities.
A defence intelligence source confirmed Turji’s retreat to Maradun and the military’s ongoing efforts to track his movements. The source emphasized the need for caution, noting that Turji may be moving with women, children, and possibly kidnapped victims. “Yes, Turji and a few of his lieutenants managed to evade our bombardment. We have observed occasional movements of these individuals accompanied by vulnerable groups,” the source said.
The official assured that security forces are monitoring the situation closely and are committed to preventing further violence while minimizing civilian casualties. “Rest assured, their reign of terror is nearing its end; they no longer have a safe haven to threaten the peace and security of our communities.”
