Trump Urges Republicans to Donate to Democrats, Aid Kamala Harris in Paying Off $20 Million Campaign Debt
In an unexpected post-election twist, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has urged his Republican Party to assist their Democratic counterparts, specifically calling for donations to help Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign settle a reported $20 million debt. The suggestion, which Trump made in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), highlights his stated desire for “unity” following a highly contentious election cycle.
In his post, Trump expressed surprise over the Democratic Party’s financial situation, despite the record fundraising achieved during the campaign. “I am very surprised that the Democrats, who fought a hard and valiant fight, raising a record amount of money, didn’t have lots of $’s left over,” he wrote, suggesting that the Democrats are now “being squeezed by vendors and others.”
The Democratic National Committee and Harris’s campaign raised an unprecedented $1 billion following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race earlier in the year. However, according to reports, Vice President Harris’s campaign expenses exceeded this total, resulting in a significant deficit of $20 million. Trump suggested that the Republican Party’s excess funds could be put to use supporting this effort, referring to his campaign’s ability to rely on low-cost “earned media.”
Trump’s call for support marks an unusual appeal for cross-party assistance, particularly in the wake of a polarizing election. Emphasizing his commitment to “desperately needed UNITY,” Trump wrote, “Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult period, I would strongly recommend we, as a Party and for the sake of UNITY, do.”
