Trump to End US Birthright Citizenship in Immigration Crackdown
United States President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants as part of a sweeping immigration crackdown. This policy shift is expected to be one of ten executive actions Trump plans to take on his first day in office, aiming to reshape federal immigration and border policies.
According to Reuters, an incoming White House official stated that the federal government will no longer recognize automatic birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants born in the U.S. The administration also plans to enhance vetting and screening measures for undocumented individuals.
The move challenges the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which grants citizenship to all individuals born or naturalized in the country. Legal experts have widely understood this provision to apply regardless of parental immigration status, making Trump’s proposed policy a significant departure from existing norms.
This effort aligns with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, a central theme of his political platform. Other anticipated executive actions include using the military for border enforcement, designating cartels and gangs as terrorist organizations, and halting asylum and refugee admissions. Trump is also expected to issue an order reversing immigration programs introduced by President Joe Biden’s administration.
