Trump Stuns Ramaphosa With ‘White Genocide’ Video in Explosive Oval Office Showdown
An Oval Office meeting meant to mend U.S.–South Africa ties erupted into controversy on Wednesday when President Donald Trump blindsided President Cyril Ramaphosa with a video alleging a “white genocide” in South Africa. In a staged and theatrical moment, Trump dimmed the lights and ordered the video—captioned “Proof of Persecution in South Africa”—to play across screens as stunned aides and diplomats looked on.
The nearly five-minute clip, later posted to the White House’s official X account, rehashed debunked claims long pushed by far-right circles and amplified by figures including Elon Musk. Ramaphosa, clearly caught off guard, maintained his composure but was visibly unsettled as the footage played.
In a pointed retort, Ramaphosa asked, “Have they told you where that is?” before challenging the narrative head-on. “If there was Afrikaner farmer genocide, I can bet you these three gentlemen would not be here,” he said, motioning to members of his largely White delegation, including Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and golf legends Retief Goosen and Ernie Els.
“There is criminality in our country,” Ramaphosa said. “People who do get killed, unfortunately through criminal activity, are not only White people; the majority of them are Black people.”
The clash escalated further when the two leaders addressed South Africa’s controversial land reform policy. Ramaphosa defended the program as a long-overdue attempt to address apartheid-era land dispossession. But Trump interrupted, claiming the policy had led to the “execution” of White South Africans—an allegation South Africa has repeatedly dismissed as false and inflammatory.
Tensions between Washington and Pretoria have grown in recent years, culminating in a partial freeze on U.S. funding to South Africa over the land policy dispute. Ramaphosa’s visit was seen as a chance to reset relations. Instead, it echoed the volatile tone of Trump’s earlier Oval Office confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which ended in acrimony.
This latest showdown leaves little doubt that diplomacy under Trump remains as unpredictable—and combustible—as ever.
