Tragedy: 11 Kenyan Varsity Students Killed in Road Crash

11 students from a renowned Kenyan university lost their lives in a devastating road accident. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 5:50 pm (1450 GMT) near Maungu, a town situated 360 kilometers (220 miles) from the bustling capital of Nairobi. The ill-fated students, hailing from Kenyatta University, were en route to the coastal town of Mombasa when their bus collided with a truck amid heavy rainfall.

According to authorities, the bus, carrying a total of 58 individuals on an academic excursion, skidded off the road while attempting to overtake a line of vehicles. As rain poured down relentlessly, the driver’s maneuver caused the bus to veer off to the right, prompting the truck driver to swerve in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision. Tragically, this maneuver resulted in a collision with the left side of the university bus.

Ten students succumbed to their injuries on the spot, with another losing their life later in the hospital. Additionally, 42 individuals sustained severe injuries in the accident and were rushed to a nearby hospital in the town of Voi, as confirmed by the Kenyan Red Cross.

In response to the heartbreaking incident, Kenyatta University expressed profound grief and established a support desk at its main campus to extend assistance to those affected during this trying time. Furthermore, efforts are underway to assess and potentially evacuate injured students to Nairobi for advanced medical care.

This unfortunate event adds to the grim statistics of road accidents in Kenya, where poor road conditions and rampant disregard for traffic regulations contribute to frequent tragedies. According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority, 4,324 fatalities and 18,561 injuries were recorded in road accidents throughout 2023, marking a slight decrease from the previous year. However, the onset of 2024 witnessed a surge in road fatalities, with 536 lives lost between January 1 and February 11 alone—a five-percent increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
