Niger Republic Junta Revokes Military Agreement with US, Citing Imposition of Terms
The military junta in Niger Republic has announced the termination of its cooperation with the United States, revoking a longstanding military agreement. This agreement had permitted military personnel and civilian staff from the US Department of Defense to operate within Niger’s borders.
Amadou Abdramane, spokesperson for the Niger military, made the announcement on national television, emphasizing that the agreement, signed in 2012, had been imposed and encroached upon the nation’s sovereignty.
“The government of Niger, mindful of the aspirations and interests of its people, has taken the decisive step to immediately terminate the agreement concerning the status of US military personnel and civilian employees of the American Department of Defense within the Republic of Niger,” Abdramane stated.
He further elaborated, stating, “Not only does this agreement lack fairness in its essence, but it also fails to align with the desires and interests of the Nigerien populace.”
The junta’s declaration comes following a visit by a high-ranking US delegation to Niger earlier in the week. Abdramane revealed that discussions during the visit focused on Niger’s ongoing military transition.
However, he criticized the US delegation for what he described as a breach of diplomatic protocol, citing a lack of prior notification regarding their arrival, delegation composition, and the purpose of their visit.
Abdramane accused the US of adopting a condescending demeanor, underscored by purported threats of reprisal from the head of the American delegation towards the Nigerien government and its people.
Expressing regret over the perceived attempt by the US delegation to dictate partnership choices, Abdramane warned that such behavior could erode the longstanding relationship between the two nations and undermine mutual trust.
