Traditional Council Condemns Painting of Azikiwe Sculpture in Onitsha

The Onitsha traditional council has expressed strong disapproval of the painting of the bronze sculpture of Nigeria’s first president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, located at the DMGS roundabout in Onitsha.

The sculpture, a work of art by the renowned Professor Ben Enwonwu, commemorates Azikiwe’s legacy as the first to hold the title of Owelle Osowa Anya in Onitsha. According to a statement issued by Osita Anionwu, the council’s chief of staff, the act of painting the sculpture has not only compromised its artistic integrity but also demonstrated a disregard for its cultural and historical significance.

The council emphasized that the bronze sculpture was never intended to be painted, as doing so damages the metal, disrupts the artist’s original intent, and diminishes its aesthetic value. The statement called for immediate action to restore the piece to its original state, urging relevant authorities to engage experts in art restoration to rectify the damage.

The council further highlighted the need for careful consultation with experts when handling culturally and artistically significant works. It expressed hope that such incidents would serve as a reminder for decision-makers to seek professional guidance in the future.

In addition, the statement demanded accountability from those responsible for the act, insisting that they take swift measures to repair the damage done to the sculpture. The council stressed the importance of preserving the integrity and legacy of works that hold deep meaning for Onitsha’s history and heritage.
