Tinubu to Meet Labour Leaders Over Minimum Wage on Thursday
President Bola Tinubu is set to engage with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Thursday, July 18, 2024, to finalize discussions on the minimum wage.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohamed Idris, announced this during a briefing with state correspondents following the eighth Executive Council of the Federation meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
Idris highlighted that the executive council acknowledged the prevailing complaints among Nigerians, particularly concerning transportation, food prices, and shortages. In response, the federal government is taking comprehensive measures to address these issues, including the distribution of 20 trucks loaded with 120, 25kg bags of rice to every state, including the FCT.
Additionally, the Executive Council has instructed the Presidential Committee on CNG to expedite its efforts in supplying buses and ensuring the availability of conversion kits to reduce reliance on petrol. The council also directed the Ministry of Budget to prepare an amendment to the 2024 budget to accommodate these measures.
President Tinubu’s upcoming meeting with the organized labour is anticipated to be a decisive step towards resolving the ongoing tension over the minimum wage issue.
