Tinubu Reacts to Okonjo-Iweala’s Reappointment as WTO Director-General
President Bola Tinubu has commended the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second four-year term.
In a statement released on Friday, Tinubu praised Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership, describing it as a reflection of her exceptional capabilities and the trust the global community places in her to drive sustainable economic progress. The President highlighted her historic achievement in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member WTO.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s first term, which began in 2021, will end on August 31, 2025, with her second term set to commence on September 1, 2025. Tinubu expressed confidence in her ability to further strengthen the WTO’s role as a cornerstone of inclusive global economic development and governance.
A press release from the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the WTO’s mission of promoting a fair and equitable multilateral trading system. The statement also assured Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she continues her efforts to reform global trade practices and foster international cooperation.
