“Tinubu Must Reapply in 2027 — Presidency Not Hereditary,” ADC Fires Back at APC Over ‘No Vacancy’ Comment
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized recent remarks by the All Progressives Congress (APC) suggesting that there will be “no vacancy in Aso Rock” in 2027. The comment, made by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, has been labelled as undemocratic and disrespectful by the opposition party.
In a statement issued Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi insisted that the Nigerian presidency is not a hereditary office but a public mandate that must be earned and renewed. He argued that President Bola Tinubu must seek re-election by proving to Nigerians why he deserves a second term, especially in light of what the ADC described as “ruinous policies” that have worsened the lives of many citizens.
“We understand why APC is afraid and would wish to avoid a reckoning at the ballot box,” Abdullahi said. “But regardless of what APC thinks, there will be vacancy at the Presidential Villa in 2027. President Tinubu must reapply to the Nigerian people.”
The ADC accused the APC of arrogance and warned that dismissing the possibility of a change in leadership undermines democratic principles and disrespects the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. Abdullahi highlighted issues such as food inflation, insecurity, youth unemployment, and a weakened currency as evidence of government failure, stating that Nigerians are eager for change and will hold Tinubu accountable at the polls.
“The declaration of ‘no vacancy’ is not only arrogant but a mockery of the pain of millions facing hardship. It suggests that votes don’t matter and attempts to demoralize those who still believe in democracy,” Abdullahi added.
He concluded by warning that the APC would be judged in 2027 not by its self-praise, but by its performance on key indicators such as security, economic stability, and justice. The ADC emphasized that the ruling party does not have the right to “mark its own papers” and must earn the trust of Nigerians again through the ballot.
