Tinubu-Led Resolution: Aiyedatiwa Poised to Become Acting Governor in Ondo State

In a crucial meeting late Friday night at the state house in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu, alongside key figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has successfully mediated the prolonged political impasse in Ondo State. The impasse stemmed from the extended absence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, who returned from Germany on September 7 but has been recuperating in his private residence in Ibadan.

The resolution involves the invocation of the principle of necessity to appoint the embattled Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as the Acting Governor of Ondo State. This decision is anticipated to put an end to the five-month deadlock, allowing the state to move forward with governance.

The meeting, attended by some of Akeredolu’s cabinet members and Ondo State lawmakers, sets the stage for the Ondo State House of Assembly to reconvene on Monday. During this session, the doctrine of necessity will be invoked, granting Aiyedatiwa full powers to govern the state.

The doctrine of necessity gained prominence in Nigeria in 2010 during a similar political deadlock caused by the prolonged absence of former President Umar Yar’Adua due to health issues. In that instance, the National Assembly invoked the doctrine to proclaim Goodluck Jonathan as acting president, circumventing constitutional complexities that typically require such proclamations to be made by the ailing president.

This latest development brings hope for a swift return to stable governance in Ondo State, marking the resolution of a challenging period marked by political uncertainties.
