Edo’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, Defies Odds to Announce Governorship Bid
In a move that further exacerbates tensions within the ruling party, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, is set to officially declare his bid for the governorship on Monday, November 27. The announcement comes amidst reported discord with his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is allegedly unsupportive of Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambitions.
The formal declaration is scheduled to take place at 8 am in Eterno Hotels, as detailed in a “Special Invitation” letter issued by the Philip Shaibu Campaign Organisation and signed by the deputy governor. The invitation urges esteemed individuals to witness Shaibu’s commitment to serving as the Chief Servant (Governor) of Edo State.
Shaibu’s political maneuvering has not been without controversy. In a previous clash with Governor Obaseki, he resorted to legal action, filing a case in an Abuja High Court to prevent his potential impeachment. Although the case was later withdrawn following interventions from well-meaning individuals, Shaibu continues to face political isolation, maintaining his office outside the Government House in the GRA, Benin City.
Undeterred by these challenges, Shaibu has been actively engaging with politicians and the media, signaling his determination to pursue the governorship. A close aide revealed, “If everything works according to his plans, he will officially declare his intention next week.” The deputy governor has reportedly secured a campaign office along Airport Road, with campaign vehicles already arriving, indicating advanced preparations for the upcoming political battle.
Speaking in Abuja on Saturday, Shaibu emphasized his desire to lead Edo State, citing the urgent need for practical governance. He argued against experimenting with leadership, stating, “Competence and experience should be the watchword. Who is competent, more experienced, and who will hit the ground running from day one if he becomes governor?”
As the political landscape in Edo State heats up, all eyes are on Monday’s declaration event, anticipating the unfolding dynamics between Shaibu and Obaseki, and the impact on the upcoming governorship race.
