Tinubu is Not ‘T-Pain,’ Understands Nigerians’ Hardship – Onanuga Assures Public

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has clarified that President Bola Tinubu is not insensitive to the economic challenges facing Nigerians, as some have suggested by labeling him “T-Pain.” Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Onanuga addressed social media discussions where critics have “mischievously” given Tinubu this nickname, suggesting he is causing pain rather than easing it.

“Some people, out of mischief, call him ‘T-Pain,’ but he (Tinubu) is not T-Pain,” Onanuga stated, emphasizing that the President is working tirelessly to address economic challenges. “The President has never shied away from telling Nigerians that he feels their pain. He is committed to relief and to bringing long-term prosperity to the country.”

Onanuga explained that while Tinubu is aware of the difficulties Nigerians face, he does not focus on social media commentary. His administration’s primary objective, he added, is to “repair the economy,” not inflict hardship.

This statement comes amid heightened public grievances over economic policies, notably the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of forex rates, which critics claim have exacerbated inflation, especially in food and energy prices. This year, many Nigerians have seen their purchasing power dramatically reduced, sparking two significant protests aimed at urging the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reconsider its policies.

Despite these pressures, Onanuga pointed out that the Tinubu administration remains steadfast, citing economic growth and rising revenues as indicators of progress. “Even amid inflation, we are witnessing growth. Revenues have increased,” he noted.

The administration has, however, indicated it will continue its reforms, viewing them as essential steps toward economic stability and future prosperity, despite the immediate challenges they have presented to the public.
