Tinubu Celebrates El-Rufai on 65th Birthday Amid Political Tensions

President Bola Tinubu has extended birthday wishes to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as he marks his 65th birthday, despite ongoing political tensions between the two.

In a statement released on Sunday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised el-Rufai for his contributions to democracy, national service, and mentorship of young leaders. He also acknowledged el-Rufai’s role in shaping the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its electoral successes in 2015, 2019, and 2023.

“President Tinubu celebrates Mallam El-Rufai on this occasion and commends his endeavours for democracy; his meritorious service to the nation, and mentorship of the younger generation,” the statement read. “The President acknowledges Mallam El-Rufai’s role in the dialogues leading up to the formation of the APC and his contributions to the success of the party in three consecutive elections.”

The birthday message comes amid political friction between the two camps. During the buildup to the 2023 elections, el-Rufai was among the northern leaders who pushed for power to shift to the south after former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. He strongly supported Tinubu’s candidacy but later found himself sidelined after his ministerial nomination was blocked by the Senate over security concerns. Analysts saw this as a calculated move to curb his influence within the government.

Following his exclusion from the federal cabinet, el-Rufai distanced himself from the political scene but has recently re-emerged as a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration. His social media activity has also drawn attention, with frequent retweets of posts critical of the government. Speculation is growing that he may be exploring alternative political affiliations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Adding to the intrigue, el-Rufai recently claimed that there were plans to arrest and torture him should he return to Nigeria. While these allegations remain unconfirmed, they have fueled further speculation about his political future and relationship with the current administration.
