Three Masqueraders Detained in Nsukka for Alleged Assault on Residents
Three members of the ‘Oriokpa’ masquerade group have been detained by police in Nsukka, Enugu State, for allegedly assaulting residents during a cultural celebration. The incident, which occurred on June 22 and was captured in a viral video, involved several individuals being attacked and left with injuries. One victim was reportedly hospitalized.
According to a statement released by police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe on Tuesday, the arrests were made on June 23 at around 3:30 p.m. with the help of community members. The masqueraders initially fled the scene when confronted by law enforcement but were later identified and apprehended.
SP Ndukwe confirmed that several other suspects involved in the attack remain at large. He stated that the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has ordered a full investigation to ensure all perpetrators are held accountable. Commissioner Giwa acknowledged the cultural significance of masquerade festivities but condemned their misuse for criminal activity, warning that such behavior would not be tolerated.
The police have assured the public that those responsible for the assaults will face justice.
