“Third Term Under Obasanjo Would Have Saved Nigeria” – PDP Youth Leader
The Deputy National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Timothy Osadolor, has said Nigeria would have been better off if former President Olusegun Obasanjo had been allowed a third term in office. Speaking on Monday in Abuja, Osadolor argued that the country made a costly mistake by rejecting Obasanjo’s bid to extend his presidency, insisting that Nigeria’s governance and institutions might have been stronger under his continued leadership.
Osadolor drew comparisons between Obasanjo’s record in office and what he described as the failings of successive governments, noting that the years following Obasanjo’s exit exposed gaps in leadership and institution-building. “With the benefit of hindsight, and given the performance of governments that followed, I think Nigeria should apologise to President Obasanjo for denying him a third term,” he said.
He added that Obasanjo’s extended leadership could have helped to stabilise the country’s democracy and build stronger national institutions. “Perhaps a third term under him would have stabilised and strengthened our national institutions. We would have had fewer strongmen and stronger institutions,” Osadolor remarked.
